Joe’s story of telephone volunteering

My name’s Joe Pick, I’m 69 years old. Harry has a dog, a cocker spaniel, that’s
his main companion. This dog has, he can sense when Harry is unhappy, when Harry’s been crying.
And he starts kissing him, or licking him, licking him, licking him. Sorry. What I found when I first came here was I
was so lonely, so homesick, I swore that later on in life if ever something like this comes
across me, I would embrace it and try and make friends with everybody, if possible,
because you only have one life. Every Tuesday, at 11 O’clock on the dot, I
have a telephone conversation with Harry, and I try and steer the conversation about
what he’s interested in, what makes him happy. Everybody needs somebody. That’s what I think
anyway. Once you have somebody things start to open up and you feel normal, if there is
a normal. It’s almost like church you would say, but it just makes you feel fulfilled
emotionally.
